Bristol City suffer injury blow ahead of Coventry City clash as talisman ruled out

Coventry City news from CoventryLive as we take a look at the opposition injury news ahead of Saturday’s trip to Ashton Gate

Coventry City’s next opponents, Bristol City, have suffered a setback with the news that talismanic striker Nahki Wells is set to miss the next couple of weeks after suffering an ankle injury in the 2-1 loss at Leeds United ahead of the international break.

There was concern when Wells left the field in the 30th minute after a challenge by Leeds captain Pascal Struijk in which the defender accidentally fell onto the veteran front man’s ankle. The Bermudian needed assistance from a physio both to leave the pitch and then make the walk around the Elland Road pitch before returning to the dressing room.

Bristol boss Nigel Pearson admitted after the game that the mere fact Wells had to come off was reason for concern given the 33-year-old’s durability and insistence at often playing through pain. And after undergoing a scan last week, Wells has been fitted with a protective boot for his rehab and will be subject to further assessment, but the hope is he’ll be out for weeks rather than anything longer, depending how he responds to treatment.

However, it’s reasonable to forecast he will miss the remainder of the month, with games against Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Cardiff City to close out October when the Championship resumes this weekend.

Pearson, whose side have lost three of their last four league matches, would undoubtedly ideally like to have Wells in his squad for those matches, having scored three goals in 13 matches across all competitions, but his absence coincides with Tommy Conway’s return to fitness

The 21-year-old missed eight weeks with a hamstring injury but made three substitute appearances in recent weeks, scoring a match-winning brace at Rotherham United, and he could be in position to start against the Sky Blues on Saturday (3pm kick-off). Pearson also has Harry Cornick as a central striking option should Conway be deemed not quite ready.
