Former Celtic star Gary Caldwell in line for shock managerial return in England - Football Scotland

Exeter City ‘need to be more aggressive’ to end losing streak

“The realisation has to come, what we are doing isn’t good enough and has to be better and we have to improve in every way.”

Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell is expecting to see a much more aggressive attitude from his squad for this Saturday’s clash at home to his former club Wigan Athletic. The Grecians will have had ten days without a game after the trip to Bristol Rovers was called off due to international call-ups.

It is four defeats in a row in League One as City have dropped down to 12 th in the table. But a weekend off, and an opportunity for the likes of Ryan Trevitt and Admiral Muskwe to return to fitness, could be just what City need, with a chance to reset and regroup.

Victory over Premier League Luton Town, which saw them reach the fourth round of the Carabao Cup for the first time since 1989, is the only victory in the last seven, with six defeats. Those seven games have seen just two goals scored – and 24 conceded – including 14 in the two EFL Trophy games.

City now have five games in the next two weeks when City return to action on Saturday. Home clashes with Wigan Athletic and Lincoln City in League One and then an FA Cup first round tie against the Latics are the next three Saturdays, with a trip to Derby County and then Middlesborough at home in the League Cup on the Tuesday nights.

“We have to regroup, work hard, and get things right,” Caldwell said. “We have started the season well but gone away from that. We are not creating enough from the possession we have and we need to make our own luck. When we get players back and a threat in the final third, the quality we have will improve, and I am sure we will score more goals, we are creating chances, but not putting into the net.

“There is loads we can work on and we have two weeks to do so, but the realisation has to come, what we are doing isn’t good enough and has to be better and we have to improve in every way.
