The Tigers boss will be aiming for a first home win in five outings this weekend against Southampton

Liam Rosenior believes his methods will achieve success at Hull City in the long term, as he sets about tackling the next batch of games following the October international break, and says without them some of England’s top talent would not be calling the MKM Stadium home.

The Tigers boss and his players return to action this weekend after the latest stoppage for internationals and will face the third relegated Premier League club in the opening 12 games with Southampton the visitors to the MKM Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

City sit ninth in the league and are just one point outside the top six and three adrift of Preston in third place, with the Lillywhites due in East Yorkshire later this month, but questions have remained about a style of play which has seen the Tigers go from relegation candidates last season to play-off contenders this.

A 2-2 draw at Millwall last time out saw Rosenior field more questions about City’s possession-based approach, and in typically forthright fashion, explained to the London press pack why he remains steadfast in his belief that his style of play will prove successful.

“If I think ideally, I’ll be sacked, that’s not my job,” he told reporters. “My job is to win games of football. When I was a little boy, I wanted to be a manager. From the age of 10 years old, I studied and studied until now, I’m nearly 40. I’ve studied for 30 years to do this. I like watching players express themselves and play, be free. When I was a kid, I wanted to have the ball. As a coach, why would I coach in a way I don’t believe in? I believe in this way because it wins games of football long term, and what you’re doing is you’re developing players.

“We’re going back to my style of play. I speak about the style of play every single game, every single week but I promise you if we don’t play like this, I promise you, Jaden Philogene, Liam Delap, Tyler Morton – three England Under-21 internationals, they don’t come here, they go somewhere else.

“There’s a reason in playing this way, I believe – and there’s nothing against the way Gary (Rowett) plays, or the way Middlesbrough play, or the way Southampton play, whoever it is – I believe in my way. I will be adamant. If you’re a coach, you have your fundamentals, beliefs, a way of working. It might work, it might not, but I’m going to do it my way and see if it works
