Holding a 5-3 lead over the Texas Rangers heading into the bottom ninth, Game 1 of the 2023 World Series was Arizona‘s for the taking.
Instead, the National League champion-Diamondbacks suffered one of the most dramatic late-game collapses in Fall Classic history as Texas’ Corey Seager hit a two-run homer off Arizona closer Paul Sewald to tie it at 5 and force extra innings. Adolis Garcia then hit a walk-off home run in the 11th to call game.
The Cuban slugger known as El Bombi drove a 3-1 sinker from Miguel Castro the other way into the right-field seats beyond a leaping Corbin Carroll. It was García’s second RBI of the game, setting a record for most in one postseason with 22.
‘It was an exciting moment,’ García said. ‘I was just looking to the dugout, looking at all my (happy) teammates.’
García has homered in five consecutive games, tied for the second-longest streak in postseason history, and he delivered the first walk-off homer in the World Series since Max Muncy connected leading off the 18th inning of Game 3 for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2018 against Boston and Nathan Eovaldi — who started for the Rangers in this one.
Adolis Garcia hits a game-winning HR in the 11th to complete Texas’ comeback from 5-3 down
In the first extra-inning game of this postseason, Texas became the first team to win a World Series game when trailing by multiple runs in the ninth since the 2015 Kansas City Royals in their clinching Game 5 against the New York Mets.
Game 2 is Saturday night in Texas. Merrill Kelly is scheduled to start for Arizona, while Jordan Montgomery is on the hill for Texas.
Red-hot rookie Evan Carter got the home team on the board in the first inning on Friday with a RBI double that scored Seager. Garcia then followed with a single of his own that scored Carter.
But Diamondbacks starter Zac Gallen would settle down to close out the inning, giving Arizona’s hot bats a chance to take the lead in the third.
After Alek Thomas and Evan Longoria both reached in the top half of the frame, NL Rookie of the Year favorite Corbin Carroll tripled to center scoring both.
Ketel Marte would hit into a fielder’s choice to score Carroll, putting Arizona up 3-2.
Texas wasn’t done though.
After Gallen struck out the first two Rangers in the bottom half of the third, Texas managed to load the bases for Mitch Garver, who drew a walk that tied the game at 3.
But the Diamondbacks bats were not done either.

Tommy Pham homered deep to left in the fourth for the 4-3 lead, before Marte’s fifth-inning double scored Geraldo Perdomo to push the advantage to 5-3.
The two-bagger extended Marte’s postseason hitting streak to 17 games, tying the major league record shared by Derek Jeter and two others.
Hank Bauer had hits in 17 straight games for the New York Yankees during the World Series from 1956-58. His mark was tied by Jeter from 1998-99 and Manny Ramirez of the Boston Red Sox from 2003-04.
The blown save for Sewald, first in seven chances this postseason, was the first glaring blip for a Diamondbacks bullpen that’s been brilliant in October.
‘It’s frustrating. This is how the game goes sometimes. And we’ve got to find a way to be resilient and adaptable and come out with a clean mind and do our best,’ Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said. ‘I have every reason to believe we will. We’ve done it a lot this year.’

Seager’s tying shot was similar to the solo homer he hit in Game 7 of the AL Championship Series in Houston four nights earlier, and the reaction was as well. That one put the Rangers ahead to stay in the clincher, with the All-Star shortstop giving a massive hand slap to third base coach Tony Beasley and jumping in the dugout with his teammates.
‘Just excitement. This is fun. This is playoffs. This is kind of what it’s all about,’ Seager said. ‘It was a cool moment, for sure.’
Travis Kelce, of the Chiefs, was spotted in Arlington, Texas, for Game One.
Former US President George W. Bush, who used to own the Rangers from 1989-1994, was also in attendance with his wife and Former First Lady, Laura Bush.
