Social media reacted after Michigan O-lineman Gabe VanSickle committed to Ohio State

When I first started covering Ohio State football recruiting over 35 years ago “talking” to a prospect meant in-person or over the phone. Now “talking” also includes social media and especially X.

Back again today with a collection of the top tweets after Ryan DayJustin FryeMark Pantoni and the Ohio State staff have landed a talented addition for the program. Coopersville (Mich.) offensive lineman Gabe VanSickle has committed to the Buckeyes.

Happy Thanksgiving from everybody at Bucknuts.com!

No. 2 Ohio State travels to face No. 3 Michigan on Saturday in the biggest college football game of this regular season as well as one of the larger games in the 119-year history of The Game – considered by some as the greatest rivalry in all of sports. This game, as always, will kick at noon Eastern time and will be televised nationally by FOX.

Ohio State and Michigan are among five remaining Power Five conference unbeatens (all 11-0), along with No. 1 Georgia, No. 4 Washington and No. 5 Florida State in this week’s College Football Playoff rankings.

The stakes could not be any higher as these two storied rivals meet for just the fifth time ever as undefeated and untied teams. That happened previously in 1970, 1973, 2006 and last year.

The 2006 game was a one-versus-two game as No. 1 Ohio State held off No. 2 Michigan 42-39 to advance to the BCS National Championship Game that season. That was the first time both teams entered this game at 11-0. It also happened last year, when Michigan came to Columbus and knocked off the Buckeyes 45-23. The teams were both 8-0 in 1970, when OSU won 20-9, and 9-0 in 1973, when the game ended in a 10-10 tie.

This game mirrors the 2016 game, which also pitted No. 2 Ohio State against No. 3 Michigan. That game, which OSU won 30-27 in overtime, pitted teams that had each lost one game previously.

Here are more interesting notables surrounding this game:

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh will serve the third and final game of a Big Ten-imposed three-game suspension in connection to allegations a Michigan staff member had set up an elaborate spying scheme on the Wolverines’ future opponents, including Ohio State. Harbaugh was also suspended for the season’s first three games due to NCAA recruiting violations.

Offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore will serve as UM’s acting head coach for this game.

* The winner of this game will advance to the Big Ten Championship Game on Dec. 2 in Indianapolis. Iowa (9-2, 6-2) has already claimed the Western Division title. The Hawkeyes wrap their regular season against Nebraska on Friday.

The OSU-Michigan winner would also be considered a shoe-in most likely for a College Football Playoff berth. The Buckeyes are seeking their sixth Big Ten title game appearance since it was instituted for the 2011 season. Michigan is looking for a third straight trip to Indy after winning back-to-back championships the last two years.

* Since 2001, Ohio State has held a 17-4 edge in this series. That has allowed the Buckeyes to trim Michigan’s edge in the all-time series to 60-52-6 (including OSU’s 2010 win, which was vacated due to NCAA sanctions).

But Michigan snapped an eight-game losing streak in the series and won for the first time in a decade with its 42-27 win in 2021 in Ann Arbor. That loss also snapped OSU’s string of four straight Big Ten championships and helped deny the Buckeyes a third straight CFB Playoff berth.
