Talented’ 21-year-old Sunderland player edges closer to first-team return

Sunderland defender Dennis Cirkin is edging closer to a first-team return following his hamstring injury.

The 21-year-old picked up the issue after the 5-0 win against Southampton back on September 2nd, with the ‘talented‘ defender missing the last six Championship

Although he’s edging closer to a return, Saturday’s trip to Stoke may come too soon for the Irish left-back.

However, he has recovered quicker than expected with boss Tony Mowbray confident that Cirkin will return to action in the not-too-distant future.

Mowbray on Cirkin’s fitness

Speaking ahead of the return of Championship football this weekend, the 59-year-old confirmed that the former Spurs defender was edging closer to a first-team return.

However, he did state in a previous press conference before the international break that the first game back for Cirkin may be too soon, with that statement still looking to be the case.

That being said, it is a positive update on the 21-year-old’s fitness – which will certainly provide a boost to the Sunderland squad upon his return.

Huge boost for Sunderland

With the news that Cirkin is edging closer to a first-team return, it can only be seen as a positive for Mowbray’s side.

Although this season he’s yet to reach the peak of his powers, his injury lay-off will provide him with an added desire to reach the levels he demonstrated towards the back end of last season.
