After the striker breaks a goalless streak, the Wigan Athletic manager admits Callum Lang
Shaun Maloney claims that Callum Lang’s goal drought never bothered him because he was satisfied with his overall support of the Wigan Athletic team.
But Lang’s first goal in one and a half years, the third of Latics’ stunning seven against Leicester City Under-21s, was the manager’s hope that some of the burden the player puts on himself may be relieved.
“I’m really pleased for Callum, you could tell that goal meant a lot to him,” said Maloney.
“His performances have been…we traveled to Derby, and he was likely a major factor in our victory there.
He has displayed some excellent performances along the way because it was the same at Bolton.
“I don’t judge his performances by the number of goals he’s scoring just because he hasn’t been scoring,” the coach said.
“I don’t believe he really understands this yet, but as the manager, I typically want the players to trust what I say.
“Look, Callum is a really, really excellent player. He just needs to relieve himself of the scoring responsibility.
“If he truly comprehends his responsibility in the middle of the field, he possesses the talent to be a key member of our team.
“In my opinion, his goals don’t put him under any additional or greater strain than they would any other player.
The way a player performs on the field is how I will always evaluate them.
You could clearly see he relished scoring his goal, and I’m delighted he did. His have been pretty nice.
