Reports: Former 49ers kicker Robbie Gould works out for New York Giants

New York Giants have a kicking problem, calling upon Robbie Gould and a few other kickers Thursday.

Reports surfaced Thursday afternoon that the Giants were working out Gould and three other place-kickers after practice. Amongst the former San Francisco 49er was veterans Mason Crosby, Randy Bullock and Matthew Wright, all working out to replace Graham Gano for the time being.

Gano is battling a knee injury, stemming from Week 8’s loss to the New York Giants. According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, he is slated to have surgery and be place on the injury reserve.

While all four contenders came into Thursday with a chance, the Giants signed Bullock to the team’s practice squad. The 33-year-old went 26 of 31 for the Tennessee Titans in 2022.

Gould, 40, spent six seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, hitting 87.5% of his field goals. He is also perfect in the playoffs, coming through in big moments over the years. The Pennsylvania native played for the Chicago Bears and Giants before heading to the Bay Area.

The veteran kicker has remained unsigned since his previous contract expired after last season, waiting for the right opportunity. Gould had hoped that would be with the Red & Gould, but he revealed very little

“I would’ve loved to have gone back there,” Robbie Gould said in July. “I told them I wanted to go back there. We never got an offer from the team and we never had a conversation about coming back.”

Instead, the 49ers drafted Michigan K Jake Moody in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He has been inconsistent in his rookie season, only making 80% of his FGs.

But while the change wasn’t his choice, Gould still wishes nothing but the best for his former team.

“The change wasn’t my decision,” he added. “Obviously, at the end of the season, they had to make a decision and ultimately they wanted to go in a different direction. “We put out the tweet that we were going to go in a different direction once we found that out. It was a great run, and it was a lot of fun. I wish all my teammates nothing but the best.”
