Tonali saga latest

Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali has hit the headlines this week after being caught up in an investigation into alleged illegal betting. The Italian midfielder was questioned by authorities on Thursday afternoon, along with Aston Villa midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo.

Since then, the duo have been released from international action and will return to their respective clubs in the coming days. Tonali was set to take part in clashes against Malta and England before it was decided he should return to Tyneside.

It has not yet been confirmed what Tonali’s role is in the saga. Here is everything we know so far 48 hours since the news broke.

Howe’s dressing room blast

Jamaal Lascelles has revealed that Eddie Howe unleashed his tough side at half-time during Newcastle United’s 2-2 draw at West Ham last weekend.

Lascelles said that the friendly face that fans usually see in front of the cameras was not on show as Newcastle trailed 1-0 at the break and had not managed a shot on target at the London Stadium. In an insightful interview, Lascelles also talked fans through the working dynamics of Howe behind the scenes and his assistant Jason Tindall.

Lascelles admitted his own start to the game at West Ham wasn’t good enough and Howe had to remind players about their high standards during the interval.

Trippier’s moment overshadowed

Newcastle United captain Kieran Trippier was handed the England armband on Friday evening but the moment was overshadowed by boos aimed at the man he was replacing, Jordan Henderson.

The former Liverpool midfielder was withdrawn in the 62nd minute and passed Trippier the captaincy as he made his way off the field. England fans made their feelings clear about Henderson as he made his way off the field, booing the 33-year-old as he exited.
