San Antonio Spurs v Indiana Pacers

Bill Simmons has one recommendation to turn the Spurs offense around

What started as a promising season for the Spurs has collapsed into a calamitous three-game losing streak as their offense and defense have floundered around Victor Wembanyama. There has been no shortage of opinions about how San Antonio should rearrange their lineups and rotations to get back on track, and prominent national talking head Bill Simmons chimed into the discussion and offered a possible solution to their dilemma in the latest episode of his titular podcast.

The collective inability to connect with Wembanyama when he is open in the paint has been among the most pervasive issues across the roster, and botching standard entry lobs and missing obvious alley-oop opportunities has left countless points on the table. Simmons was fast to show Tre Jones love as a playmaker while scoffing at the notion of Jeremy Sochan as a point guard, and he believes trading for a veteran floor general like T.J. McConnell could work wonders.

Though adding another experienced facilitator to the depth chart has the potential to alleviate some of the decision-making and passing accuracy troubles the Spurs have experienced through the first two weeks of their schedule, the price Simmons is willing to pay for McConnell is a little steep. Gregg Popovich and the front office have a treasure trove of assets, but parting ways with a protected first-rounder doesn’t make sense for someone who suits up for 15 minutes a night.

The longtime blogger and podcaster made multiple valid arguments, and San Antonio will eventually have to address their glaring need for a dynamic advantage creator. With that said, there might never be a better time for the Silver and Black to experiment with positionless basketball and test the limits of this young core than now. Point Sochan is off to a turbulent start, but there have been bright spots amid the lowlights. We are eight games in, and there is no harm in exercising patience.
