Gary Caldwell: Exeter City appoint former Celtic and Scotland defender as manager - BBC Sport

Exeter City ready to stand up and fight to end losing run

“Derby won’t be an easy place to go, they are a good side, but we have to put a plan together and go there to win, and we are all motivated to go ahead and get that win.”

Exeter City skipper Will Aimson said that the squad needs to stand up and dig out a win to end their run of defeats. The 2-0 loss at home to Wigan Athletic on Saturday was a fifth successive loss as the Grecians have tumbled down the League One table to 16 th .

In all competitions, it is seven defeats in eight – only the win over Premier League Luton Town breaks up that run – with only two goals scored in that period. A tough trip to Derby County awaits tonight for City.

But the Grecians created a hatful of chances at the weekend and had 29 shots on goal, even if all four of their efforts on target came in stoppage-time. There is belief within the squad that if they keep fashioning the opportunities, the goals will eventually come.

The Rams themselves are not in the best of form and defeat at Shrewsbury Town on Saturday saw them drop down to 11 th . With the match marking the one year anniversary of Gary Caldwell’s managerial reign, City hope to at least match, if not better, the 0-0 draw they earned at Pride Park 12 months ago.

“Saturday was frustrating as we dominated from start to finish, limited them to few chances, so to concede two is disappointing,” Aimson said. “On another day, we score four or five. Credit to them, they defended the box well with some great blocks and bodies on the line but we’d like to finish a few of them off. We left everything out there

“We have had chats behind closed doors and everyone at times has dipped and it is disappointing, we cannot really have that. We need to stand up and become men and dig a win out. The morale and spirit is still there and we have to believe that we can go and win.

“We have proved what we can do and have gone to tough places and big teams and keeping clean sheets is massive, then that is something we can build off that, and we need that ruthless edge at the other end. In both boxes we need to tighten up.”
