Ipswich Town come from behind to beat Plymouth Argyle in five-goal thriller at Portman Road

The Ipswich Town juggernaut continued on its merry path at Portman Road this afternoon, though there were some bumps on the road, as the Blues recovered from going behind in a 3-2 victory against Plymouth Argyle.

A Bali Mumba own goal in first-half stoppage time got Kieran McKenna’s side back on level terms after Morgan Whittaker’s fine seventh minute curling effort had put the Pilgrims ahead.

But George Hirst fired the hosts ahead from a one-on-one effort in the 54th minute before substitute Marcus Harness doubled their advantage four minutes from time.

But it took a string of Vaclav Haldky saves for Town to remain in front ahead of the visitors pulling back to within a single goal of them via substitute Joe Edwards’ finish in the first of six added minutes.

Hladky was not troubled further though as McKenna’s side, despite not being at their best, notched up a fourth straight victory to leave them nine points ahead of third-placed Leeds United with a game in hand in the Sky Bet Championship table.

The result also saw Town exercise the demons of last season when Plymouth, who went into the game 18th in the table, had pipped the Suffolk side to the League One title last season by three points. The Devon outfit accumulated 101 from their 46 matches, having followed up a come-from-behind 2-1 win over the Blues in a September televised affair at Home Park with a last-gasp deflected equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Portman Road in January.

McKenna made two changes from the Town side that started the 1-0 victory at Bristol City on Wednesday, with George Edmundson and Omari Hutchinson replacing Cameron Burgess and Kayden Jackson.

With Burgess not on the bench, there was a first match-day inclusion for Axel Tuanzebe at the expense of Janoi Donacien while Freddie Ladapo returned from his achilles injury with Cameron Humphreys dropping out of the 20.
