The playmaker has featured in 11 Championship matches so far this season, in which he has managed seven goals for the club as Blackburn Rovers head into the international break with the side sitting 17th in the second tier

Szmodics heads into the break, fresh from his goal during Blackburn’s 4-0 away victory against a struggling Queens Park Rangers side.

Republic Of Ireland will host Greece on Friday, before making the trip to Portugal with the side facing Gibraltar as the qualification processes ahead of the 2024 European Championship’s continue. Ireland currently sit fourth in Group B after taking just three points from their first five matches.

Due to their poor start, it looks increasingly likely that Ireland will miss out on the 2024 European Championships in Germany. Ireland are currently positioned below Greece, Netherlands and France in their qualification group, only bettering Gibraltar so far.

Szmodics replaces Aaron Connolly in the squad, with the Hull forward being the only player to drop out of Ireland’s squad for next week’s internationals but there has been no word on the seriousness of his injury.

Writer’s View

Szmodics has been one of the Championship’s star players this season and has contributed to 41% of Blackburn Rovers’ goals so far this season and given the country’s need for points, the 28-year-old is an excellent addition to the side.

His performances for Blackburn Rovers have been extremely impressive and his call-up to the Irish squad is more than deserved he will be hopeful of proving himself on the international stage in what are two must-win matches for the nation.
