Brock Purdy makes NFL history with perfect day in 49ers win

Safe to say, talks of Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers demise were greatly exaggerated. Their play since returning from a Week 9 bye has confirmed that.

After a three-game losing streak halted Super Bowl chatter in San Francisco, the Niners have responded by outscoring their opponents 61-17 over the past two weeks as Purdy has reinserted himself into the MVP discussion.

Purdy put on a clinic in Sunday’s 27-14 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, completing 21-of-25 passes for 333 yards with three touchdowns for a perfect 158.3 passer rating. His performance marked the first time a 49ers quarterback has posted a perfect passer rating since Joe Montana in Week 10 of the 1989 season (completed 16-of-19 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns). Purdy’s 25 attempts on the afternoon are the most in franchise history by a quarterback with a perfect passer rating.

Since Week 10, Purdy has posted an absurd 157.3 passer rating, the highest by any quarterback in NFL history over a two-game span, per OptaSTATS.

Despite Purdy’s brilliance, the second-year signal-caller is far from satisfied.

“What an honor, yeah at the same time, there’s some plays and stuff that I wish I had back,” he said after the win via the team’s official website. “So I’m not completely content with just that, but I thought it was a great game. The guys around me, the coaching, the play calling all of it, so that’s a testament to the team, really.”

Purdy’s MVP bid will likely fall short due to the system quarterback tag that plagues him and the fact he’ll split votes with teammate Christian McCaffrey. Nevertheless, the stats prove he’s one of the league’s premier players at his position.

Purdy is the only quarterback in the NFL to rank in the top six of completion percentage (70.2), passing yards (2,662) and passing touchdowns (18) while throwing five or fewer interceptions on the season.
