Once again, Michigan won the rushing battle and the game vs. Ohio State
ANN ARBOR – Entering last Saturday’s Michigan-Ohio State matchup, the team that won the rushing battle was victorious in every game in the series since 2000.
That streak continued as the Wolverines outgained the Buckeyes 156 yards to 107 on the ground in a 30-24 victory to clinch the Big Ten East.

It’s certainly not an ideal place to be if you’re Ohio State head coach Ryan Day. Although Day has an impressive 40-0 record in conference play during his tenure as head coach in Columbus, his record against Michigan is now just 1-3, leading many within the Buckeye fanbase to call for his firing in the immediate aftermath of a 30-24 loss in Ann Arbor.
From a Michigan standpoint, this is about as good as it gets. Although head coach Jim Harbaugh had a rough stretch against the Buckeyes to begin his coaching career at Michigan, he’s corrected course in a major way over the last three seasons.
Following Michigan’s dominant win over the Buckeyes in Ann Arbor back in 2021, Harbaugh offered the following statement: “Some people are born on third base and act like they’ve hit a triple, but they didn’t.” Although he didn’t mention Ryan Day specifically, it is generally believed that his comment was certainly directed at the Buckeye’s head coach.
Just a year prior to that game in 2021, there was reporting that Day was speaking during a Big Ten coaches conference call and that he was interrupted by Harbaugh, who accused the Buckeyes of breaking rules for providing impermissible on-field instruction before it was allowed. According to the reporting, Day responded by saying, “How about I worry about my team and you worry about yours?” After the conference call, the report went on to say that Day told his players in a team meeting that “Michigan better hope for a mercy rule this year because we are going to hang 100 on them.”
Although Michigan and Ohio State would never square off that year due to COVID issues, Day is now 0-3 against the Wolverines since his reported comments back in 2020. The belief is that Harbaugh’s “born on third” comment in 2021 was essentially a way of saying that Day was taking credit – and getting cocky – for what Urban Meyer had built.
The Maize and Blue faithful latched on to the “born on third” comment, and it’s something that is used as a jab at Ryan Day frequently in Ann Arbor these days. As evidence, look no further than today’s tweet from the official Michigan Baseball twitter account.
Just as Harbaugh didn’t in his original statement, the tweet from the Michigan Baseball account doesn’t mention Day specifically – but we all know what they’re hinting at.
Former Michigan wideout Ronnie Bell, who’s now in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers and was in attendance for the game on Saturday, certainly enjoyed the tweet.
