Ange Postecoglou set to usher in new Tottenham era amid perfect $98m triple transfer
Tottenham transfer news: Spurs could see three of their longest-serving players leave the club in the next few days
It’s been a better start to the season for Tottenham Hotspur and Ange Postecoglou than many might’ve thought. The Australian seems to have captivated supporters with his impressive new style of play – gone are the days of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte’s counter-attacking tactics.
In his own words, he might just be ‘copying Pep’ but Tottenham fans won’t care. It’s working. Boy, is it working. Seven points from a possible nine to start the season means Spurs sit third in the league after many wrote them off as ‘Europa League at best’.
But we’ve seen good starts with Spurs for years – last season they took 17 points out of a possible 21 from their first seven matches, but would ultimately finish on a measly 60 points after winning just two of their last eight to end the season.
Having lost Harry Kane earlier on in the window, Postecoglou seems content with now letting go of the dressing room’s old guard and ushering in a new era for the club
Recent reports have suggested that both Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Sergio Reguilon are both set to be made available to Manchester United after Erik ten Hag’s side’s rocky start to the season.
The pair have seen their minutes limited under their new Australian boss after the domestic campaign began, and with deadline day rapidly approaching, their involvement in this season could be just that.
football.london says: I think it’s evident neither player seems to be in Postecoglou’s immediate plans. Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr – both of whom have been fantastic so far this season – have clearly stood out to the Aussie and look to be lock-ins for the fixtures to come.
Hojbjerg offers defensive strength and could be a steal for Manchester United – that might be what they’re looking for. Casemiro has not had a good start to the season under any circumstances and Ten Hag has clearly struggled to balance out his midfield after the acquisition of Mason Mount.
But United haven’t looked strong going forward either. And that is certainly not the Danish international’s strength. If that’s what they’re looking for, they’re better off shopping elsewhere but Hojbjerg can do the job if he’s told to solidify the centre of the pitch – an area where the majority of chances against them have come so far this season.
As for Reguilon, that’s a pretty simple one. Luke Shaw could be out until December with his muscular injury and with Tyrell Malacia already on the medical table alongside him, United are desparate to find a solution to a very sudden full-back problem.
The Spaniard was touted as one of the best full-backs in the league in his debut season for Spurs following his seven-assist campaign but hasn’t looked up-to-scratch in recent times. They have other – and frankly better – options from Europe’s top five leagues but he could still see an exit late on in the window.
Another Spurs ‘veteran’ the Australian manager could replace – or rather has already replaced – is Eric Dier. Despite being a staple for both club and country for almost a decade, he’s yet to play a single minute of Premier League football under Postecoglou.
And now he might be set up for a reunion with his former club and country team-mate Kane as he’s reportedly been offered to Bayern Munich more than once over the past few days, with the Bundesliga champions taking the offers seriously.
football.london says: This is honestly one I didn’t see coming. Eric Dier to Bayern Munich? Really? I suppose if Postecoglou thinks he has his centre-backs and defensive midfielders sorted, then it makes sense but Dier is an experienced player.
From a player perspective, surely this one is a no brainer. Reunite with your good mate in Kane at a Champions-League winning team in Bayern Munich under one of world’s best managers Thomas Tuchel.
He’d no doubt struggle to find minutes in that setup in between the likes of Matthijs De Ligt, Kim Min-Jae, Dayot Upamecano and that’s just at the centre-back position.
Factor in Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich as defensive midfielders and it could be a real tough time for Dier. But then again, if Postecoglou isn’t playing him, it’s a similar situation but just surrounded by better players with better chances for silverware.
