Red Sox Reportedly Could Look To Land Rangers Star Quickly To Improve Rotation

Boston could make a move to add a frontline starter sooner rather than later

It sounds like the Boston Red Sox will land at least one top starter this offseason.

Boston’s starting rotation is the club’s biggest weakness at this point. The Red Sox won 78 games in 2023 and the biggest reason for the club’s struggles certainly was pitching. It sounds like they know this and are willing to spend this offseason to fix the problem.

The Red Sox have been linked to seemingly every top-tier starter in some way and it sounds like Boston will get one of them. Boston currently is considered one of the favorites to land Orix Buffaloes star Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Although this is the case, if the Red Sox are unable to get him, they could quickly turn their focus to Texas Rangers star Jordan Montgomery, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

“Left-hander Jordan Montgomery might not have to wait for Yamamoto to choose a team or the trade market to get moving,” Passan said. “Coming off a bravura performance for the World Series-winning Texas Rangers, he finds himself in a sweet spot: His performance certainly warrants a nine-figure deal, but not one so rich that he needs to draft off Yamamoto (which teams believe National League Cy Young winner Blake Snell will do). The Rangers want to re-sign him. He could be a strike-first option for Boston if it’s feeling squishy about Yamamoto. Same to the Cubs, particularly if the top end of the market doesn’t pan out. Something in the Patrick Corbin range, at six years and $140 million, feels like a reasonable landing spot, executives said.”

Montgomery has been mentioned as a fit for the Red Sox on multiple occasions at this point. He will be cheaper than Yamamoto and still would improve the Red Sox’s rotation. He doesn’t have the upside of Yamamoto, but is very steady and immediately would help improve the club.
