New York Mets Sign Former Houston Astros Promising Reliever

The New York Mets are taking a chance on a former Houston Astros reliever.

The New York Mets continue to make smart moves in the early part of the offseason. For the Mets, these moves could come back to be helpful, even if the players aren’t the biggest names.

This time around, New York’s adding a reliever to the mix.

Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reported that the Mets have agreed to terms on a minor league deal with former Houston Astros reliever Andre Scrubb. It hasn’t been reported if the contract includes a big league spring training invite. Scrubb, who made his debut with the Astros in 2020, last pitched in independent ball during 2023.

In 2020, Scrubb had impressive numbers. He posted a 1.90 ERA in 23 2/3 innings pitched. When his walk rate increased, his numbers went up and he posted a 5.03 ERA across 18 appearances during the 2021 season.

For New York, this is a small move that could pay off in the long run.

Scrubb has proven that he can get outs at the big level and if he can keep his walk rate down, he’s more than serviceable.

As currently constructed, the Mets don’t have much in the bullpen. Even in the rotation, New York has three starters that they should feel confident in. In the 2023 season, the Mets posted a 4.45 ERA, the ninth-worst team bullpen ERA in baseball.

For a bullpen that can seemingly only improve, taking a flyer and hoping Scrubb improves could be beneficial.

For the Astros, Scrubb likely wasn’t going to ever return and make an impact for the team.
