Blackburn Rovers loanee hoped he had made perfect Motherwell debut, but not to be

Georgie Gent struck the underside of the crossbar during his side’s 1-0 defeat at home to St Mirren

Georgie Gent thought he had made a perfect debut for Motherwell with an equaliser against St Mirren – but says they have to take the defeat on the chin.

The 19-year-old sent a shot flying goalwards late in the game, only to see it crash off the underside of the crossbar, and that meant Saints took the three points back to Paisley, following Scott Tanser’s 54th-minute volley.

Gent, who is on loan from Blackburn Rovers’ under-21s, said: “I thought it was going to be the dream debut, and it was close.

“I thought it had gone in, but it’s just one of those things.

“It wasn’t our day, but we regroup and we go again.

“We deserved a point but it’s football at the end of the day – you win some, you lose some. We’ll be back.

To be honest, I thought we were the better team, but it happens.

“We will regroup, and the lads will be up for the next one.”

Former Man City youth left-back Gent is keen to get minutes under his belt at Fir Park and says he has settled in well.

“I’m loving it here,” he said. “The lads have been class since day one, making me feel welcome and that has boosted my confidence.

“I’ve got to play games, get experience, be around a first-team environment.

“Just to play the professional game and get some time under my belt, and see how it goes from there.

“The manager has told me to be patient and bide my time, and when my chance comes, take it and keep my spot in the starting XI.”

One attraction to Motherwell for Gent is the chance to play against Rangers at Ibrox next Sunday, and he said: “Personally it will be a great experience, playing at Ibrox, which I have never done before.

“I’m sure it will be a tough test, but we will be up for it.”
