Blackburn Rovers Set To Explore Championship Striker Deal

Blackburn Rovers are exploring the option to sign former Lincoln City loanee Liam Cullen from Swansea City, according to Pete O’Rourke.

The forward is entering the final year of his contract at the Liberty Stadium and the Swans are yet to open any talks regarding a new deal. Jon Dahl Tommason’s side are eager to add attacking reinforcements to their squad before the window slams shut at 11pm tonight. Cullen could be available on a cut price deal, due to his expiring contract and lack of game time which could prove an attractive proposition for Blackburn to pursue. They have already seen a bid rejected for Hertha Berlin forward Derry Scherhant and are exploring other targets.

Cullen is a product of the Swansea City academy, where he has progressed through the ranks to be part of the first team senior squad. He had a brief spell at League One Lincoln City, but failed to capture the imagination of fans as the Imps struggled, narrowly avoiding relegation late in the window. Following this he returned to his parent club and impressed in the little appearances he made scoring 9 goals in 32 appearances whilst at times slotting in on the wings rather than in his favoured centre-forward position. The Welshman has been capped by his national team up to U21 level but is yet to make an appearance, despite being on the bench for their European qualifying defeats to Armenia and Turkey in June.

The 24-year-old has bags of potential, but has failed to find a home to get regular game time. It is therefore hard to really judge him, he impressed in spells for Swansea from the bench but really disappointed when given a chance at Lincoln City alongside then teammate Morgan Whittaker. He needs to nail down a starting spot wherever he ends up and this could be one of the most vital decisions of his career so far.
