Brilliant’ Sheffield Wednesday summer signing offers hope for the future

Colombian goalkeeper Devis Vasquez kept his first clean sheet for Sheffield Wednesday in their battling draw at Leeds United before the international break

Assuming Devis Vasquez returns from international duty with Colombia unscathed, it is highly likely he will be in between the sticks for Sheffield Wednesday’s up-and-coming Championship fixture with Ipswich Town.

The 25-year-old, on a season-long loan from Italian giants AC Milan, recorded his first clean sheet in Owls colours last time out as Xisco Munoz’s side claimed a well-earned point against Leeds United. It was his fifth start since joining the South Yorkshire club.

“He [Vasquez] has been brilliant,” said captain Barry Bannan. “It’s weird because in the earlier games he wasn’t at fault for any of the goals and he didn’t have much to do apart from the goals.

“We saw what a good goalkeeper he was at Leeds, he was called into action a few times and made some good saves.

“It’s good for us, it’s good for his confidence as well. He’s done really well since he’s come in, he’s settled in well and I think he’ll be a good addition for the club going forward.”

“His English is really good which helps with the defenders and he’s fitted in nicely. A lot of the new boys have been brilliant and have settled into the changing room nicely.

“The team spirit is great, they’ve all settled in well and after the international break you’ll see a lot of the new boys featuring.”

Munoz is still searching for his first league victory since taking over the reins at Hillsborough. Three points over the Tractor Boys could lift Wednesday out of the relegation zone.

After Ipswich, the Owls entertain fellow strugglers Middlesbrough before a long trek to Swansea City. They finish the month with a televised clash against Sunderland under the lights at S6.
