Bristol City defender signs new contract on deadline day to end transfer threat

Zak Vyner has become a key player and figure within Nigel Pearson’s squad

Bristol City may not have been able to bring any further players in on transfer deadline day but the club were still able to secure a significant deal with Zak Vyner agreeing a new three-year contract at Ashton Gate.

There was concern that the Robins were vulnerable to bids for the centre-back in the closing stages of the window as he was into the final 12 months of his agreement and had interest across the Championship and beyond.

After talks had stalled over the summer, Bristol Live understands a resolution was reached over the last 24 hours with the 26-year-old in South Wales preparing for Saturday’s Championship clash against Swansea City.

Vyner made 45 appearances for City last season as he was named Players’ Player of the Year after a campaign of considerable progress and development in which he became a regular in the heart of the Robins defence.

A product of the Robins academy having joined the club as a schoolboy, after spending much of his early professional years either on loan or with sporadic first-team appearances across a number of positions, he’s found consistency at centre-back under Nigel Pearson.

“I’m super happy to be signing this contract and to get it over the line,” Vyner said. “I’m going into a big part of my career and to be doing it with the club I have been at since I was eight years old is even more special.

“We’ve got a good, hungry squad and I want to try my best to contribute as much as I can to take us as high as possible in the league and get us into the Premier League – that’s the club and my ambition.”

Vyner’s new deal comes a week after Cam Pring also agreed a new contract at Ashton Gate, and in the same calendar year as agreements for Rob Atkinson, George Tanner and Max O’Leary as Pearson looks to safeguard core elements of his squad.
