Tottenham wanted over £10m from Leeds United for Joe Rodon before compromise reached – Phil Hay

Leeds United signed Joe Rodon on loan from Tottenham during the summer transfer window, but Spurs initially wanted a fee of over £10million for his services before a compromise was reached, according to Phil Hay.

The Athletic journalist shared via their website on 15 September that there is a strong executive relationship between Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy and Leeds CEO Angus Kinnear, which helped in agreeing on a loan move.

Spurs’ initial demands of an eight-figure transfer fee were appeased by the loan deal, as any further improvement to Rodon’s game through first-team experience will prove beneficial to them if they want to sell him in the future.

Leeds benefiting from strong relationships

Having strong working relationships with other sides in football can often prove beneficial in the transfer market, particularly when those relationships are with some of the country’s stronger teams, and that has proved to be the case here for Leeds.

Rodon arrived at Elland Road alongside Tottenham teammate Djed Spence, for whom Leeds were also able to get a good deal, with the £1million loan fee paid seen as a major coup by top officials at Elland Road.

To negotiate Spurs down from a £10million minimum transfer fee to a straight loan deal is a great piece of business by the Yorkshire side, as they improved a position that was proving to be an issue in pre-season by bringing in an experienced senior international footballer for a minimal fee.

The defender will be looking to push ahead with his own game, as well as in efforts to bring Leeds back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, and is clearly a big part of Daniel Farke’s plans, with his ability with the ball at his feet a huge part of the way the boss likes to play.
