Colchester United boosted ahead of Tranmere Rovers clash

COLCHESTER United have received a quadruple boost ahead of tomorrow’s home clash with Tranmere Rovers.

New signings Cameron McGeehan and Jay Mingi have both trained at Florence Park this week and could make their debuts for the U’s this weekend, along with fellow recent recruit, Zach Mitchell.

In addition, experienced striker John Akinde is set to return to the squad after a three-game absence due to injury.

And goalkeeper Owen Goodman is also available, having returned early from an England under-20 training camp, following a prior agreement between the U’s and the Young Lions.

Colchester boss Ben Garner said: “Cam and Jay have both trained this week which has been great to get them straight involved.

“They’ve both looked good.

“Zach Mitchell is fine in terms of that and is up to speed already.

“They will all come into contention for the weekend, which is great for us.

“John Akinde has trained (on Thursday) which is great and he will come back into the fold for Saturday.

“Owen has been away with England under-20s but we had an agreement where he would go and train which he did until (Wednesday) and return to us today (Thursday).

“But we’ve lost one other to injury this week unfortunately so some positive news but then a little bit of a setback, with one of the players.”

Owura Edwards is not yet available to make his second debut for Colchester, following his deadline day arrival from Bristol City on a permanent deal.

The winger has an ankle injury and is a number of weeks away from fitness.

Garner said: “Owura is a few weeks away – we knew that with him coming in from Bristol City, with the ankle injury he’s got.

“He’s a player who’s going to be a great addition, moving forward.

“It’s just for the next few weeks that we’re not going to have him available.”

Striker Tom Hopper is still unavailable for Colchester, this weekend.

The 29-year-old has missed the U’s last three games.

Garner added: “Hops has had an injection this week which we now let settle for a few days but the plan is for him to return next Tuesday.

“Fingers crossed this will be the last one that he’ll be unavailable for.”
