Coventry City Maintain Interest In League One Captain
Coventry City are still interested in signing Barnsley captain Liam Kitching before Friday’s deadline, according to a report from the Yorkshire Post.
The 23-year-old has already been on the receiving end of a bid by the Sky Blues this summer which was turned down, but it appears as though the Championship side’s interest won’t be going away anytime soon.
Who is Liam Kitching?
The Barnsley captain began his career with Leeds United and had a loan spell with Harrogate Town before he was judged to be surplus to requirements, leaving Elland Road for Forest Green Rovers and then Barnsley in January 2021.
Since then, Kitching has made almost 100 appearances at Oakwell, featuring in the Championship and League One, reaching the play-off final before losing to Sheffield Wednesday. He’s scored once in four games so far this season.
A positive start
Coventry City suffered an opening day loss to Leicester City but have since gone unbeaten in their next three games, beating Middlesbrough 3-0, before draws against Swansea and Sunderland.
The Sky Blues have been busy this summer with ten new additions to the Championship side, following their play-off final defeat against Luton Town.
Chance for a reunion
Speaking of the ten new additions, two of them played with Kitching at Oakwell last season. The first is Barnsley goalkeeper Brad Collins who joined Coventry to provide competition for Ben Wilson, whilst loanee Bobby Thomas completed a £2 million switch from Premier League side Burnley.
Writer’s View
As a Coventry fan, I would love to see Kitching join the Sky Blues, especially considering Mark Robins is still in the market for a left-sided centre-back to compete with Luis Binks and Joel Latibeaudiere.
However, Barnsley won’t sell him for cheap and given the opening offer was worth around £3.5 million, Coventry will need to up their offer if they want to test Barnsley.
