Coventry City ‘want’ £5m Championship striker but transfer faces stumbling block

Latest Coventry City transfer news as the Sky Blues are credited with interest in Blackburn Rovers striker Sam Gallagher, who could be available for a reported £5million

Coventry City have baulked at the asking price for Blackburn Rovers striker Sam Gallagher, according to a report.

The Sky Blues are reportedly keen on the 27-year-old, along with Championship rivals Stoke City. Boss Mark Robins is in the market for a striker after losing Viktor Gyokeres to Sporting in a £20million deal.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, both Coventry and Stoke “won’t meet” the £5million asking price Blackburn have put on the forward’s head. His wages could also prove problematic too, with Gallagher said to be on a “lucrative contract” at Ewood Park.

It’s said that Stoke are keen and could return later in the window, with Blackburn potentially prepared to sell “if the price is right”. It is unclear whether Coventry will revisit their interest at a later date.

Gallagher scored eight goals in 34 Championship appearances last season, while also recording two assists and being booked eight times. Those stats have been enough to catch the eye of Championship rivals.

The danger for Coventry in losing someone like Gyokeres is that their league rivals know the club have money to spend in the transfer window. That could well inflate valuations, even if the Sky Blues are not prepared to match those figures. They have also signed Ellis Simms from Everton. Meanwhile Blackburn may also be reluctant to sell for a reduced price after they lost key man Ben Brereton-Diaz to Villarreal earlier this summer

Meanwhile, Coventry have reportedly had a second big knocked back for Dutch under-21 star Milan van Ewijk. That’s according to reports in the Netherlands, which claim Coventry have “wanted to capture” the right-back for a long time. He is also facing interest from Leeds United.
