Enzo Maresca calls Leicester City goal hero ‘most important player we have’ after Southampton

Latest Leicester City news as Enzo Maresca hails club legend Jamie Vardy after his early goal against Southampton

Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca has called Jamie Vardy “the best player we have” after his goal kickstarted a 4-1 thumping of Southampton.

Vardy opened the scoring just 21 seconds into the match, and it was the first of four goals Leicester scored at St. Mary’s to come away with all three points in a convincing display.

It’s now five wins out of six for Maresca’s men in the Championship this season, and Vardy will be crucial to the way Leicester play moving forward as they look to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

“I have always said the same about Jamie,” Maresca told Sky Sports after the match. “He’s not a player I discovered. His history talks for itself. He’s a huge player, a big player. Probably the most important player we have. But at the same time, we also have Kelechi (Iheanacho) and (Patson) Daka so we just try to manage the players at the front

“I’m happy for (Jamie) that he scored, for a striker that’s the most important thing. And I’m happy for the performance of the team.”

Maresca also had a word of praise for a returning James Justin, adding: “Veyy happy for the result, it has been a good one. Especially for players like JJ that wasn’t involved too much until today.

“He showed how good he is and how hard he works. Also the players who came off the bench: Casadei, Yunus, Hamza, all of them. This for us in the most important thing. In the end we need 20-25 players until the end.”
