Enzo Maresca follows Claudio Ranieri path as Leicester City start earns award
A perfect start, with four wins from his four Championship games in August, means Enzo Maresca has been handed the division’s manager of the month prize by the EFL
Enzo Maresca’s perfect start to life at Leicester City has been recognised with the manager of the month award.
While his 100 per cent record is now gone following the weekend loss to Hull, Maresca’s first month in charge saw City win six from six, including four from four in the Championship.
That has seen him rewarded with the EFL’s first monthly prize of the campaign. He is the first City boss to win a manager of the month award since Claudio Ranieri in April 2016, the month before the club’s historic Premier League title win.
City earned their four victories in August – against Coventry, Huddersfield, Cardiff and Rotherham – thanks to a series of late goals, with all four winners coming in the final 20 minutes. Three of those came in the final 10 minutes, with Cesare Casadei’s goal against Cardiff notched in injury time.
Receiving the award from the EFL, Maresca thanked both his players and his backroom team, and said that this was just the start for City.
“I’m very happy, but as happens in football, you never reach something yourself, you need people behind you,” he said. “First of all, the players, they are the most important and then the backroom staff for sure.
We started two months ago – one month for pre-season and one month for the official competition. We started in the right way in terms of results and the way that we play. For sure, there are many things to improve but this is the right way.”
City will hope to get back to winning ways when they are next in action against promotion rivals Southampton next Friday.
