Enzo Maresca makes Leicester City transfer admission after failed Man City move

The latest Leicester City news as the manager has spoken about the transfer window which closed just under two weeks ago.

Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca has hinted that the club were looking for a new midfielder before the end of the transfer window, following an injury to Dennis Praet.

The Belgian international has been ruled out for at least 10 weeks with a back injury he picked up the day before the 2-1 home win against Cardiff City in mid-August. He had featured in all three of the previous games, starting the 1-0 win vs Huddersfield.

City completed the deadline day signing of striker Tom Cannon to take their incomings to nine players over the summer transfer window. Asked by Sky Sports if he is happy with his squad, the City boss said: “Yeah, the players that we have, they were all out targets.

“Probably with Dennis Praet’s injury, three months, we could have needed one more midfielder, but now the transfer window is closed, so it’s done.”

The comments come after City did attempt to sign Man City youngster James McAtee on loan. It has been suggested that Pep Guardiola’s side wanted to send him to City, with the player even visiting the club’s Seagrave Training centre.

However, after having a successful 2022/23 season with Sheffield United where he earned promotion, the midfielder pushed to return to the Blades and completed a deadline day move.

It was not just incomings that were on the agenda at the King Power Stadium this summer, with James Maddison and Harvey Barnes among the players to move on. Other members of the squad including Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho were linked with moves back to the Premier League, but will now remain at City until at least January.

Maresca has said that the lack of transfer speculation following the closing of the window now makes his and his squad’s job easier.

“It’s much more easy for us, for me, for all of the managers to work when the window is closed,” he said. “Also, especially for the players, it’s much more easy to be focused because probably until the last day, most of them, they are thinking something can happen but now it’s completely different.”
