Harry Wright leaves Everton as Fleetwood transfer announced today

Fleetwood Town have signed 18-year-old Harry Wright formerly of Everton, on a one-year contract with the option of a further year.

The Cods officially announced the news on Saturday (1 July) after they had fought off significant competition from various EFL clubs to land their man.

Wright became an Everton scholar at the age of 16 and featured 34 times across his two-year scholarship with the club. He was recently released by the Toffees following the conclusion of the 2022/23 campaign after not being offered a new deal.

He will now switch Merseyside for the Fylde coast and is set to link up with Matthew Lawlor’s Development Squad and meet his new teammates during pre-season training this week.

This is a clever move for the versatile full-back as he seeks regular football after he was let go by Everton.

He is now likely to be offered more game time and will have a greater chance of pushing on and featuring in Fleetwood’s first team where he will gain valuable EFL experience in League One.

Clearly, he was just not quite at the level required by Everton following the conclusion of his scholarship. It is always tough to see a young player let go after they work so hard to earn their spot however that is unfortunately the nature of football.

While Everton fans will now be focussed on the season at hand with plenty of issues still ongoing at the club, it will be nice to look down to League One and see one of their own and everyone connected with the club will be wishing him the best.
