EVERTON WANT TO SIGN ‘TOP DRAWER’ £50K-A-WEEK ENGLISHMAN
Everton are interested in snapping up Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy with Luton town considering him too expensive.
Alex McCarthy is wanted by Everton and Crystal Palace after a move to Luton Town seemingly broke down.
That is according to the London Evening Standard, who claim that McCarthy is a wanted man this summer.
It’s suggested that Everton would like to bring McCarthy to Goodison Park as experienced competition for Jordan Pickford between the sticks.
Asmir Begovic has left Everton for Queens Park Rangers this summer and the Toffees are looking for another stopper.
McCarthy is one target and it’s claimed that Everton have actually been looking to sign him for ‘a while’ now.
Crystal Palace are also interested in re-signing McCarthy; the 33-year-old played for Palace for just one year between 2015 and 2016.
Vicente Guaita is at odds with Palace right now and McCarthy could be handed a route back to Selhurst Park as a replacement.
It’s added that Luton Town wanted to sign McCarthy but talks broke down over his £50,000-a-week wages.
Southampton could let the veteran stopper leave for nothing because of those wages, with Everton and Palace maybe more willing to pay than Luton.
Who is Everton target Alex McCarthy?
McCarthy was in the youth ranks at Wimbledon and Wycombe Wanderers before joining Reading as a teenager.
The Royals sent McCarthy out on loan eight times, allowing him to join Woking, Cambridge United, Team Bath, Aldershot Town, Yeovil Town, Brentford, Leeds United and Ipswich Town.
McCarthy did end up making 75 first-team appearances for Reading but was sold on to Queens Park Rangers in 2014.
After just a year with QPR, McCarthy joined Palace and was on the move yet again just 12 months later as he joined Southampton.
Now with the Saints for seven years, McCarthy has racked up nearly 150 appearances for Southampton and has even earned an England cap.
Hailed as ‘absolutely top-drawer’ by Theo Walcott, McCarthy has been a fine servant to Southampton and could provide the kind of competition Everton want for Pickford.
