Everton transfer deadline day state of play as Maxwel Cornet talks held and Alex Iwobi exit expected
Latest Everton transfer deadline day news including updates Maxwel Cornet, Danny Ings, Alex Iwobi and Nico Elvedi
The transfer window has entered its final stages as the clock ticks down to Friday’s deadline.
For Everton, this presents the club with one last chance to strengthen Sean Dyche’s squad. So far, we have seen the arrival of five new faces
however, the club’s recruitment department is still working to reinforce key areas before Friday’s 11pm deadline. A number of different options are believed to be under consideration.
In a bid to further bolster Dyche’s attack, Everton held talks with West Ham United on Thursday over a deal to take Maxwel Cornet on loan for the rest of the season. The winger was signed by Dyche at Burnley and is keen on a reunion with his former boss at Goodison Park.
Cornet played 15 times during the last campaign under David Moyes but suffered injury problems that limited his action. He has so far made just one appearance this season.
An enquiry was also made to the Hammers over the availability of Danny Ings earlier this week. The England international was wanted by former manager Frank Lampard back in January, but it remains to be seen whether the current Europa Conference League holders would consider sanctioning a deal so late in the day.
However, the ECHO understands that talks were not opened earlier this week over a deal for Nico Elvedi. It was claimed in Italy that Everton were in negotiations with Borussia Monchengladbach over a transfer for the defender.
But senior figures close to the Goodison Park club dismissed the prospect of the centre-back making the move to Merseyside this summer. The Swiss international has also been linked with a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
In terms of outgoings, there is a growing belief at Finch Farm that Alex Iwobi will join Fulham before tonight’s deadline. The ECHO understands Everton are in advanced talks with Marco Silva’s side over a deal for the 27-year-old.
Fulham made an approach to Everton earlier this week, and since then talks have continued between both clubs. The Nigeria international is currently in the final year of his Goodison contract and is claimed to be valued at around the £20m mark by the Blues.
Demarai Gray has also been the subject of a bid from Al-Shabab and has also attracted interest from Premier League clubs. The winger is yet to feature this season, with Dyche citing fitness reasons after his outings at the Gold Cup during the summer, but both parties are said to be open to an exit, and it could well come past Friday’s deadline due to the transfer window in Saudi Arabia being open until September 7 for clubs in the Pro League.
Tom Cannon continues to attract interest from a number of clubs in the Championship after an impressive loan spell at Preston North End during the second half of last season.
The Aintree-born forward scored eight times in 20 appearances for Ryan Lowe’s side, who have held talks with the Blues over a loan deal for Cannon throughout the summer. The ECHO has previously reported that North End and Sunderland were keen on signing the forward this summer,
but it has now emerged that Leicester City and Norwich City are also eyeing a move for the Republic of Ireland under-21 international.
