Blackburn Rovers boss keen to make most of time in training

Jon Dahl Tomasson says the Rovers squad are hurting after tasting defeat at Plymouth – but hopes they can use it as motivation to keep improving on the training pitch.

Tomasson’s side were beaten 3-0 by the Pilgrims after goals from Finn Azaz, Ryan Hardie and Luke Cundle.

Rovers created some good opportunities in the final third – the biggest falling to Ryan Hedges in the opening 10 minutes – but failed to make them count.

It was a sucker punch after a couple of promising victories on the road.

“We are disappointed because we hate losing,” said the boss. “The fans are disappointed, a lot of them made the long journey and we wanted to give them a point or something more.

“We created a lot of chances but fans also want to see the ball flying into the net, like me and like the players.

“We will be disappointed for the first couple of days and after that, we will work hard to keep developing this young but interesting team.”

Rovers’ next league fixture is on Saturday, September 16 when Middlesbrough make the trip to Ewood Park.

Several members of the squad are heading out on international duty including Adam Wharton, who has received a first call-up to the England Under-20 squad.

The highly-rated midfielder has previously featured at Under-19 level and will now link up with Joe Edwards’ squad.

Tom Bloxham has also been called up to the Republic of Ireland Under-19 squad for their upcoming friendlies in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The former Tottenham youngster was on target in the 8-0 win at Harrogate last week and make his Championship debut at Plymouth, coming off the bench for the final 12 minutes.

Meanwhile, Andy Moran and Zak Gilsenan have both been called up to the Republic of Ireland Under-21 squad and 16-year-old Tom Atcheson has been selected by Northern Ireland’s Under-19s.
