Exeter City injury updates as Grecians hope to add signing by Saturday

“We hope so and we are speaking to people, trying to definitely get one – possibly two – done, so fingers crossed we can get that over the line for Saturday, but if not, then early next week”

Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell is hopeful of adding a new face to his Grecians squad in time for Saturday’s League One clash with Cheltenham Town.

City are in the midst of an injury crisis and while he hopes to have some players back for the visit of the Robins, Exeter were dealt a fresh blow with the news that Finnish international Ilmari Niskanen suffered a dislocated shoulder in his country’s 1-0 defeat to Denmark last week.

Caldwell missed out on the signing of Fulham youngster Luke Harris just minutes before the close of the transfer window and with Sam Nombe departing for Rotherham United, the Grecians are lacking in the forward areas with Caldwell scouring the free agent market to boost his squad.

“We hope so and we are speaking to people, trying to definitely get one – possibly two – done, so fingers crossed we can get that over the line for Saturday, but if not, then early next week” Caldwell said. “We are working on that.”

City are well stocked defensively, so any new addition is likely to be in the forward areas with 18-year-old Sonny Cox their only fit striker right now. James Scott has missed the last five matches, but he could be fit enough to play some part tomorrow, while loanee Admiral Muskwe is also struggling with a hamstring issue.

With Nilskanen out, loanee Dion Rankine recovering from a hamstring injury back at Chelsea and Harry Kite not due back to full training until next week, City are especially light down the right-hand side, but the injury to Niskanen is a real concern to Caldwell.

That was a huge blow to the crisis we already had with him being away on international duty and then seeing him come off after 12 minutes,” Caldwell said. “He has had an X-ray, which came back clear, so there is no fracture, which is good, but he’s getting an MRI scan on Saturday morning and it is not going to be quick, whatever the result of that is.

six week mark.

“He dislocated it when making a tackle and then dislocated it again ten minutes later just moving his arm, which is a bit of a worry when it came out so easily, so it’s a massive blow because he’s been a great addition for us.”

On the other injured players, Caldwell said: “Some of them are close to returning. James was on the bench last week, he couldn’t come on, we just put him there to show we had players that could potentially come on, but he’s trained this week and will do a full day today (Thursday).

“Ads and Vinny (Harper) have both been working hard with Michael (McBride) and Sam (Alfieri) and have a small chance of making Saturday. Cheick (Diabate) will train today and has a small chance of making Saturday; Kitey will be back in full training on Monday, which will be a big boost, so they are all getting better and getting closer.

“I always feel that when you have an injury crisis, very quickly you come out of that. I don’t think that will be this weekend, but by next weekend, we should have most of those players back.”
