Bolton Wanderers 7 Exeter City 0 – Grecians suffer worst league defeat in 65 years

It is now nine without a win in League One for City – one draw and eight losses – a run in which they have scored just twice and conceded 27 times

Exeter City’s long wait for a league win continued after they were thrashed convincingly away to Bolton Wanderers. The Grecians were comfortably beaten 7-0 as the wretched run of form continued on another desperate afternoon

City were in the game for the first 35 minutes, but two soft goals just before the stroke of half-time cost them dearly. Firstly Jack Iredale was left unmarked to head home from close range to break the deadlock. Then after a corner was cheaply given away, Victor Adeboyejo was presented with the easiest of chances to make it two.

Paris Maghoma added a third early in the second half to seemingly put the game beyond any doubt. Dion Charles then made it four just after the hour as the rout continued, and then made it five on 75 minutes. Kyle Dempsey made it six when he headed home from a corner late on, before Dan N’Lundulu completed the scoring in stoppage-time.

It is now nine without a win in League One for City – one draw and eight losses – a run in which they have scored just twice and conceded 27 times. It is the worst run of form in the League since a ten game run without a win between November 2000 and January. Bolton meanwhile made it seven straight wins as they went top of the table.

Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell made six changes from the side who ended a ten game winless run with victory in the EFL Trophy at Swindon Town on Tuesday night. Vil Sinisalo returned in goal after being on international duty with Finland, while Ilmari Niskanen, Ryan Trevitt, Zak Jules and Jack

Aitchison all made starts.
As did Cheick Diabate, his first in the league all season, with the centre back again lining up in an unfamiliar striking role, as he did in the second half midweek. Reece Cole was fit enough for a spot on the bench after injury, but Admiral Muskwe was unavailable after a hamstring strain.

The Grecians started the brighter of the two sides, but it was Bolton who had the first chance, Gethin Jones flashing an effort across the face of goal. City had half a chance when Jack Aitchison was found in space on the edge of the box, but his cross-come-shot evaded everyone.
