Exeter City reaction demanded after worst defeat in 65 years

“We have to find a way to do something about it on Tuesday night.

Having suffered their worst league defeat in 65 years, Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell has demanded a reaction from the Grecians when they host Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday night. While the boss was backed by the club and trust boards last week, a repeat performance of the 7-0 thrashing by Bolton Wanderers would surely call for a re-assessment of that position at the very least.

Not since 1983 had City conceded seven goals in a league game before the clash against the table topping Trotters. It was the worst defeat in the league since the record-equalling 9-0 loss to Northampton Town in April 1958 – of course – Exeter also lost 9-0 this season in Reading in the EFL Trophy.

Having been top of the League One table in September, City have taken just one point from the last nine games and plummeted down to 20 th , and now have the worst goal difference in the division. While the amount of goals being given away is a real concern – it is 27 in the last nine league games – and 46 in the last 15 – the lack of goals at the other end is a problem.

City have scored just two goals in the last nine League One outings, have only scored in five of the last 15 games, and the only team to score fewer than the Grecians in the league are Cheltenham Town, who didn’t get off the mark until October 7. City had just one shot on Saturday, which wasn’t on target.

However, Tuesday’s opponents, Shrewsbury Town are just as shot-shy. The Shrews have played two games more in League One than City, and have only scored 12 goals in 19 games, although they do sit 12 th in the table, and did beat Port Vale 2-1 on Saturday. Matt Taylor’s men have scored just once away from home since August – so there will be no excuses if goals fly past City.

“It is never nice to lose any game, to lose 7-0 is embarrassing,” Caldwell said. We let the supporters and the club down and we have to live with that. We have to regroup and come together on Tuesday night to win a football match. Hopefully this is rock bottom from the run that we are on and we can start to build our way out of it Tuesday and the coming games.”
