Report: Forest really considered signing ‘world class’ superstar who Messi called ‘spectacular’
Nottingham Forest considered the signing of world-class central defender Sergio Ramos during the summer transfer window. The centre-back recently signed for Sevilla but he spent the entire summer as a free agent.
According to The Athletic, Forest were preparing to make a big move for the talented defender. However, it wasn’t close to ever being completed but merely highlights that the Reds left no stone unturned in their quest for new players.
Forest finished the transfer window with 13 new additions. Having seen 28 players depart in either permanent moves or on loan, this was about par for the course as the Reds targeted quality over quantity.
Signing Ramos would have seen Forest fans dancing on the streets of West Bridgford. The 37-year-old has won it all in club football; with four Champions League titles and one World Cup crown sitting on his mantlepiece at home.
Ramos made 671 appearances for Real Madrid, scoring 101 goals and picking up 26 red cards. He then moved to PSG where he spent two seasons and made 58 appearances for the Parisian giants.
Now, he’s moved to Sevilla and that is where it all began for Ramos. His first foray into men’s football came with the La Liga outfit but that didn’t stop Forest trying to bring him to the City Ground during the summer.
Forest tried to sign Ramos this summer
Luis Enrique used to manage Spain. When he did he praised Ramos, calling the central defender ‘unique’ and ‘on a different level’ after he collected one of his 180 caps for his country.
Furthermore, Zinedine Zidane called him ‘one of the best in history’ and Lionel Messi called him ‘world-class’ and ‘spectacular, with the player holding a huge reputation.
Signing a player with that sort of experience and quality would have been unbelievable. However, it would have been a short-term deal and crucially, Ramos would have cost Forest a lot of money.
Forest did get some central defenders over the line. They completed a deal for Murillo who is viewed as a Brazilian wonderkid and Andrew Omobamidele who is a burgeoning talent from the EFL.
Ramos would have been an unbelievable coup for Forest. However, it appears nothing was ever close and this was nothing more than a tentative effort by the Reds.
