Breaking News: Gillingham suffers an injury just as the attacker starts to shine

George Lapslie, a forward for Gillingham, left the game on Saturday with an injury after scoring against Morecambe.

George Lapslie looked the part before and throughout the game against Morecambe, so Gillingham is hoping that his most recent injury absence is only short.

After missing two weeks due to a concussion, Lapslie struggled to play at his best against Harrogate the previous week. However, he was at his best in practice prior to the Morecambe game and scored just 10 minutes into the game. He then came dangerously close to adding a second goal as he stayed alert to any chances in the box.

After gaining possession to assist in the Gills’ second goal in minute 23, he pulled up with a hamstring strain, dealing a severe blow to the Gills.

Although the team has several of attacking alternatives, manager Neil Harris believes Lapslie is the team’s top goal scorer.

I genuinely thought on Thursday and Friday (in training) that he started to look the part again, better than at any point from the beginning of preseason onward.

He is a vital member of our team. George is a player who responds best to minimal coaching; you just let him run; like a Duracell battery, he runs and runs until he emerges in the proper spot.

Macauley Bonne is the natural finisher in the group but George gives a real goalscoring threat and we saw that, he pops up in the right place at the right time, time and time again, he has done that in the last three or four years.

“It is important we get him fit and keep him fit.

“He looked extremely sharp, his movement was excellent, he handled the ball really well, him and Macauley looked a really dangerous partnership.

“George Lapslie going off was a major loss for us, showing how important he is to the team because the game changed once he went off, so hopefully we get him back sooner than later.”
