The Australian youth international has exited the John Smith’s Stadium in a permanent transfer to pursue a new challenge with the League One promotion hopefuls

Terriers goalkeeper Nicholas Bilokapic has joined League One side Peterborough United on a permanent transfer, the specifics of which are undisclosed.

The Australian youth international acted as back-up at Huddersfield Town last season and got two brief runs in the first team last season: after Lee Nicholls picked up a shoulder injury on New Year’s Day, and after Nicholls’ short-term replacement Tomas Vaclik was forced to sit out with an injury of his own in February.

Bilokapic made seven appearances in total last season and drew particular praise for his excellent performances against Hull City – his Championship debut – and Birmingham City, where his long pass set up fellow academy graduate Jaheim Headley to score the winning goal in Neil Warnock’s first game back at the club.

Those performances suggested the 20 year old was ready to start getting regular minutes, but Nicholls’ return to fitness and the arrival of experienced backup in the form of Chris Maxwell meant that was unlikely to happen at Town in the near future. Bilokapic will be hoping to establish himself between the sticks at London Road.

Town boss Neil Warnock explained: “Having now experienced first team football, it’s understandable that Nick wants to push himself to gain minutes at that level more regularly and Peterborough have really pushed for him.

In the fortunate position to have two highly experienced goalkeepers now available to us in Lee Nicholls and Chris Maxwell, it’s unlikely that Nick would have gained the experience with us that he is looking for at this stage in his career. The deal agreed also protects the club should he go on to do well in the future, which we obviously hope he does.

“Nick is a good kid with real ability and has plenty still to learn. I’ve enjoyed working with him since returning to the club and wish him well in his future career and going forward with Peterborough.”

Peterborough will themselves be hoping to challenge for promotion after being on the receiving end of an incredible Sheffield Wednesday comeback in the second leg of last season’s play-off semi-final.
