Huddersfield Town duo earn praise after making debuts for loan clubs

The Terriers sanctioned loan moves for both Jordan Rhodes and Connor Mahoney with the pair making their bows for their respective new temporary employers

Huddersfield Town pair Jordan Rhodes and Connor Mahoney endured forgettable debuts for their temporary employers last weekend – but that didn’t stop them earning individual praise.

Rhodes was despatched to League One side Blackpool whilst Mahoney has checked in at League Two outfit Gillingham. Neither got the result they wanted on debut at the weekend; Blackpool lost 3-0 to Lincoln whilst the Gills lost out to Colchester by the same scoreline.

Despite the heavy loss, Seasiders’ manager Neil Critchley was full of praise for veteran Rhodes who came on as a first half substitute.

“Jordan showed his quality when he came on,” said Critchley. “He made a difference straight away, he brought something we were missing. The keeper made a great save from him when he nearly scored.

“He held the ball up well and brought us into the game well. He showed his experience and that was a positive for us today. He’s in good condition and is a good professional- you can see that by looking at him. He’s had some minutes in pre-season so I’ve got no concerns about him.”

As for Mahoney, he played 89 minutes on a forgettable day in general. But his skipper Shaun Williams, a former colleague of his at Millwall, believes he will prove to be a canny signing.

Williams reflected: “He’s a great addition to the squad. I have been chasing him to come, luckily enough we got it over the line. He has got that quality end product in the final third, he has played a higher level than we’re at now and hopefully he’ll bring that to the table. He is also a nice guy, a good professional and has definitely settled in well.”

Unlike Town, both players are in Carabao Cup action midweek against Premier League opposition. Blackpool go to Wolves whilst Gillingham travel to Luton
