Farewell to Neil Warnock, the man who inherited a shadow of a club but gave fans something they'll never be able to repay - Scott Johnson - Wales Online

Huddersfield Town transfer state of play after Delano Burgzorg addition as deadline looms

The summer window is both winding down and heating up with the transfer deadline now less than a fortnight away and business still to be done at the John Smith’s Stadium

The transfer window will close in less than two weeks, giving the Terriers – and the rest of their Championship rivals – just 12 days to get their final bits of business done before the deadline of 11pm UK time on Friday September 1.

Huddersfield Town are hoping that the impending deadline will mean the transfer market is now starting to thaw out as they aim to get a few more players in the door to add quality to Neil Warnock’s squad.

Both the gaffer and sporting director Mark Cartwright have been clear that is the priority more than merely bringing in numbers to add depth to the squad. So what do Town want to do – and might we see any more exits?

What have Huddersfield Town done in the transfer market so far?

Goalkeeper Chris Maxwell was the first new face of the summer, with the free agent arriving as backup to Lee Nicholls following the end of his contract with relegated Blackpool.

Right-back Tom Edwards followed on loan from Stoke City, giving the Terriers an experienced option for a position that was otherwise lacking in one for as long as Ollie Turton remains on the comeback trail from his ACL injury.

Fans had been desperate to see a new attacking signing, and they finally got their wish on Thursday afternoon with versatile and skilful Mainz forward Delano Burgzorg announced on a season long loan.

As far as outgoings are concerned…utility man Duane Holmes has departed for Preston North End, goalkeeper Nicholas Bilokapic left in a permanent move to League One promotion hopefuls Peterborough United, midfielder Etienne Camara was sold to Italian Serie A side Udinese, and Will Boyle will be the star of season three of Welcome To Wrexham after making the move to League Two. Striker Tyreece Simpson has meanwhile moved on loan to Northampton Town.

Are Huddersfield Town going to sign anyone else?

They certainly hope so. Club owner Kevin Nagle made clear that although the club have to stick to the budget they laid out as part of their takeover, per the EFL’s FFI directives (separate from FFP – but we’ll get into that another time), they do still have room in the wage bill to ‘pursue additional players’.

Ideally, they would like that to be another forward and a midfielder. Speaking before Burgzorg’s signing on Thursday, Warnock said: “We do need two or three more players. I’m working hard – midfield as well as up front – to bring one or two in.”

On that potential midfield signing, Warnock said: “I have one or two in my mind. I’ve made an offer for one. We’ll just have to see. I think things will hot up, really, near the deadline, where you’re going to get the odd player that you didn’t think about before – so I would imagine nothing will change on that.”

It’s quite possible – there’s a few players still in that squad who haven’t really featured since Warnock arrived back at the club in February who you suspect they’d quite like to get off the wage bill if they can.

The gaffer has acknowledged that striker Jordan Rhodes and winger Connor Mahoney are among that number, though so far moves are yet to materialise.

Rhodes, in particular, has been the subject of constant rumours after starting just two games under Warnock – and those were in last season’s final day dead rubber against Reading and last week’s Carabao Cup loss to Middlesbrough.
