With Evan Ferguson dominating the headlines when it comes to the exploits of Irish players this season, the exploits of Aaron Connolly at Hull City have gone somewhat under the radar.

Having had a disastrous spell in his career over the last couple of years, there were fears that the Galway native was slowly fading into obscurity. However, after joining Hull on a permanent basis over the summer, he has quickly got things back on track.

Despite being largely consigned to appearances off the bench, Connolly scored three goals in his first five Championship appearances of the campaign prior to the international break.

Hull City manager Liam Rosenior worked with the player in the youth ranks at Brighton and has now given him the opportunity to get his career back on track in the Championship. Speaking after last night’s draw, he said that the Irishman still has the quality to go to the very top of the game.

Aaron’s capable of anything he wants in his career, if he stays on track.

He’s not 100% fit, which is scary.

He’s a leader in the dressing room. He’s a massive influence and has really taken Liam Delap under his wing.

Some of his runs and some of his movement are top level. He knows when he needs a rocket but he knows I love him as I’ve known him since he was 15.

Connolly was recalled to the Ireland squad for the September window, making his first international appearance in two years when he came on in the loss to France. He is certain to be given another opportunity in October, especially if he can continue his current run of form

It’s brilliant to see him back and firing once again.
