Hull City midfielder Xavier Simons’ Fleetwood Town move takes surprising twist

The Tigers midfielder is expected to make his debut against Tranmere

Just hours after Hull City midfielder Xavier Simons joined Fleetwood Town on loan for the season, the manager who signed him was sacked.

Former Celtic midfielder Scott Brown was dismissed after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Charlton Athletic left the Cod Army having taken just one point from a possible 18 and sitting second bottom of the table.

The 20-year-old, who joined the Tigers on a permanent deal from Chelsea in January, is expected to feature in Tuesday night’s Papa John’s Trophy game at home to Tranmere Rovers as he looks to make his Town debut having signed on loan for the season late on deadline day.

Less than two months after signing a new two-year contract, Brown has been axed after six straight defeats at the start of the new season, with Matt Lawlor placed in temporary charge.

“Fleetwood Town can confirm head coach Scott Brown has left the club with immediate effect,” the League One club said in a statement.

“Following a difficult run of results the club reluctantly felt now is the right time to make a change to the First Team management.

“Assistant head Coach Steven Whittaker will also depart and everyone at the club would like to place on record their thanks to Scott and Steven for their hard work and professionalism during his time at the club.

The search for his replacement will begin immediately and we will issue a further update on the first team staff in due course.”

Meanwhile, Simons’ fellow loan ranger, Jake Leake, will not come up against his Tigers’ teammate on Tuesday evening after picking up a hamstring problem in training on Merseyside, which will keep him out for the next couple of weeks.

Leake had started the season brightly for Tranmere, making five appearances for the Prenton Park club with four of those coming in League Two.
