Sunderland head to Blackburn Rovers in midweek as they look to make it three Championship wins in a row following their weekend victory against QPR and the 5-0 thrashing of Southampton a fortnight earlier. The Black Cats were without Bradley Dack and Dennis Cirkin at QPR due to injury, while Pierre Ekwah limped out of the action early on at Loftus Road.
Tony Mowbray spoke about that trio in the immediate aftermath of the win in West London, and is expected to give another update on the eve of the trip to Ewood Park. Sunderland have some players such as Aji Alese and Eliezer Mayenda nearing full fitness.
But skipper Corry Evans and fellow midfielder Jay Matete are out long term, and it will be a while before they resume playing. Pierre Ekwah
Ekwah went off inside the opening quarter-hour in Sunderland’s win at QPR, with Mowbray explaining that the midfielder had been suffering with a dead leg during the previous week and had sustained a further blow to it at Loftus Road. It is not thought to be a serious problem and Mowbray said at the weekend: “The problem was he got a bang in exactly the same place a couple of minutes in, he tried to run it off but he couldn’t so we just got him off. “We’ll get some heat on it, give it a massage and hopefully it’ll be alright for Wednesday [against Blackburn].”
