BREAKING NEWS: Luton confirm two excellent ace to leave club by mutual agreement

LUTON CONFIRM GLEN REA AND MATT MACEY TO LEAVE CLUB BY MUTUAL AGREEMENT

Luton Town have announced that Glen Rea and Matt Macey will leave the club with immediate effect by mutual agreement.

Both players have reached agreement to leave the Hatters in the aftermath of the closing of the transfer window, with both leaving on free transfers.

Rea, who turned 29 today (03/09), will leave Kenilworth Road after a 7 year spell at the club, during which time he featured in the Hatters’ promotions from League 2 and League 1 and helping them to stabilise them in the Championship.

Rea admits it was a 'privilege' to be part of Luton's 'mad' journey after leaving Kenilworth Road

The player, who can play in defence and midfield, leaves after making over 200 appearances for the club he joined in 2016 from Brighton, captaining the team on multiple occasions.

Injury however restricted his appearances in the 2019/20 and 2021/22 seasons, with Rea spending time on loan with Wigan and Cheltenham in the last two seasons.

Rea’s work saw him write a goodbye statement to Luton Town supporters, which the club published on their website.

He said, “I’m so proud of what everyone has achieved in my time at the club. It’s been a mad journey and we’ve all experienced some unbelievable highs together, with so many players and staff having been here all the way through. To do what Luton Town Football Club has done with that core will never be repeated, and it’s been a privilege to be part of that history.

“I still will be, but from now on as a supporter because I’ll never lose that love for the club. I’ve made so many friends, not just on the football side but also among the staff who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make the club what it is, and the fans as well. As much as I’d love to have been playing all the time, I’ve had some great nights in the crowd and thank them for their constant support.

“Wherever my next move might take me, you’ll still see me at matches. But for now I want to thank everyone that I’ve worked with – all the players, managers, coaches, the brilliant medical team and sports scientists, all the staff and directors – and wish the club every success as that amazing journey continues.”

As well as Rea, Luton also confirmed the department of goalkeeper Macey.

The keeper had previously spent time on loan with Luton in 2017, and returned to the Bedfordshire club last summer in a move from Scottish side Hibernian.

But Macey made just one appearance for Luton last season, and would spend the second half of last season on loan with Portsmouth.

With Thomas Kaminski and Tim Krul joining the club, and James Shea remaining with the Hatters, it has lead to the club deciding to allow Macey to leave on a free transfer.
