New Hull City signing reveals Aaron Connolly impact after whirlwind transfer
The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international left-back is preparing for two big Euro 2025 qualifiers
James Furlong has heaped praise on Hull City striker Aaron Connolly for the way he’s helped the youngster settle into life at the MKM Stadium, having arrived in a blaze of transfer activity last Friday along with three others.
Furlong was a deadline day arrival from Connolly’s former club Brighton and amid a whirlwind 24 hours which saw him join up with his new teammates in Leicester to see the 1-0 Championship win on Saturday before heading off to link up with the Ireland Under-21 squad for games with Turkiye (on Friday) and San Marino this Tuesday.
Connolly, who rejoined City earlier this summer, made his long-awaited return to the Irish squad this week, coming off the bench for the final stages of Thursday night’s 2-0 defeat at the Parc des Princes against France.
“He’s a really good guy,” Furlong said in conversation with the Irish Independent. “When I joined the club last week he made me feel really welcome. He’s had tough times but every player does and he’s now starting games and scoring goals.
“He’s on his way to being the best he can be. Hopefully, he keeps playing. He was delighted with the (senior) call-up. We’re all delighted for him.”
Striker Connolly has developed something of a spiky relationship in the media, but Furlong says the in-form Tigers striker is nothing more than a confident individual.
“No, I think he’s just a confident guy,” the 21-year-old Dubliner said. “As a striker, you need a degree of it and he’s got that for sure. It helps him on and off the pitch. You need to have confidence no matter what position you are playing in.”
