Sunderland miss out on Newcastle target on deadline day

Alan Nixon, via his Patreon, claims Sunderland almost pulled of a surprise coup for Newcastle United target Benjamin Rollheiser. The Black Cats were said to have agreed a deadline day loan agreement with Estudiantes after they were dumped out of the Copa Sudamericana by Corinthians in midweek.

The report claims Rollheiser turned down an approach from Russia to try and force through a move to the Championship, but the deal reportedly collapsed as Rollheiser’s registration is partly owned by a third party and they didn’t like the terms of the loan.

Newcastle, Burnley and Everton were among the Premier League clubs reportedly keen on signing the Argentinian during the summer, but the Magpies didn’t submit an offer for the £12million rated star.

Newcastle warned they must avoid bloated squad

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire believes Newcastle United may be forced into selling players soon in an attempt to avoid a bloated squad like their Premier League rivals Chelsea. The Toon bid farewell to Allan Saint-Maximin this summer and replaced him with Harvey Barnes, but more fan favourites could follow in order to reach the next step.

“I think this has been relatively modest spending by Newcastle United this summer,” Maguire told Football Insider. “Costs will be amortised over the life of the contracts, but Newcastle haven’t gone down the Chelsea route.

“I think they’ve offered a more standard length of contract even though they have been targeting younger players such as Anthony Gordon. So I don’t foresee a problem.

“At some point in time, we’re going to start to see more of a balance with Newcastle needing to sell just as much as they buy. But we’ve seen Saint-Maximin go to Saudi Arabia, so there’s an element of profit with that particular deal.

“As more and more players come in, ultimately, you don’t want a bloated squad and you don’t want a bloated wage bill as well.“
