Newcastle United’s potential £130 million star’s ‘new deal’ may include ‘stupid’ clause
Bruno Guimaraes’ future remains a hot talking point as the midfielder nears a new deal at Newcastle United
The long-term future of Bruno Guimaraes could still be in doubt at Newcastle United despite the Brazilan star nearing a new deal at the club. The midfielder is in line to extend his stay after a brilliant 18 months on Tyneside but with such form has come links to some of Europe’s biggest sides – including Liverpool and Real Madrid.
Guimaraes is settled at Newcastle and is expecting his second child, and has made no secret of his wish to stay but there is a feeling that despite an extended deal, United at some point in the next few seasons will face a tough decision on the midfielder.
Speaking on The Monday Show of The Everything is Black and White Podcast, special The Mirror’s Simon Bird, is hoping any new contract for Guimaraes includes a big release clause.

“When a player comes and I mean, he took a big gamble and to come and he was the one who injected initially that ambition, and then what he’s done in 18 months is absolutely proven himself [to be] world-class and vital to the team.
“When you’ve done that on a certain level of contract as a £35 million player and suddenly people are talking about you as a £100 million player, the reality of football economics is that you think you deserve more. You’ve been a big cog in them getting the Champions League and earning £55,000 or whatever is, and you start thinking ‘I need a bit more money.’
“It’s not greedy, it’s just football economics, it’s what players expect. So they have to upgrade his contract. “I hope there’s a release clause in there of like £100 million to £130 million or something stupid like that.
“But if they do give him a new contract at some point, Newcastle are going to be sellers as well. So if you think you’ve got in two or three years the best out of Bruno, it’s time to go, and Real Madrid is your dream or Barcelona is your dream or Athletico Madrid is your dream, which you can kind of see happening at some point.
“I mean, even Darren Eales has admitted that there are times when you can’t stop a player going because it’s their dream club from where they’ve come from. I hope they stick a clause in which gets Newcastle United £100million or more, and they can reinvest it amazingly.”
