PNE battle Blackburn Rovers in race for exciting European striker
Preston North End are reportedly interested in taking Hertha Berlin striker Derry Scherhant on loan but face a battle with Blackburn Rovers.
That is according to a report from Football Insider, who claim that Scherhant is wanted in the Championship.
It’s stated that three Championship clubs – PNE, Blackburn Rovers and Queens Park Rangers – are all keen to sign Scherhant.
Burnley have also been interested in Scherhant and enquired about a deal for him earlier in the summer window.
However, Scherhant signed a new long-term deal in July, tying him to Hertha until the summer of 2027.
A permanent exit won’t be on the cards now but Hertha may be open to a loan deal in order for Scherhant to gain first-team experience.
Who is Preston North End-linked Derry Scherhant?
Scherhant hails from Berlin and has been through the ranks with a number of clubs in the German capital.
Viktoria Berlin, Tennis Borussia Berlin, Berliner SC all had Scherhant in their ranks before he moved on to Hertha in 2020.
The 20-year-old was a sensation for Hertha’s second team, smashing 27 goals and 11 assists in 48 games.
Scherhant has become a first-team player in Berlin, notching one goal in 11 senior appearances at the Olympiastadion.
Scherhant is attracting lofty interest with his potential on show at Hertha, and Newcastle United were interested in June according to The Telegraph.
That won’t be happening but whilst Hertha seem open to a loan move, that would be a surprise; they should really be using Scherhant in their quest to return to the Bundesliga.
PNE have looked to the European market this summer with Mads Frøkjær-Jensen arriving and Yasser Larouci wanted before his move to Sheffield United.
Maybe Scherhant is emerging as an alternative target to Tom Cannon given that Everton are leaving PNE waiting and waiting.
We would be surprised to see Scherhant at Deepdale but he would certainly be an exciting loan addition.
