Blackburn Rovers sign James Hill on loan from Bournemouth
Rovers have completed the signing of England Under-21 defender James Hill on a season-long loan from Bournemouth.
Hill bolsters Jon Dahl Tomasson’s defensive options with Sam Barnes set for another lengthy spell out of action.
The 21-year-old began his career at Fleetwood, making his debut in a Carabao Cup tie against Leicester in August 2018, becoming the club’s youngest-ever player.
His league debut came in a 1-1 draw against Peterborough later that season, although he made a name for himself in the 2020/21 campaign.
Hill made his England Under-20 debut in September 2021 and also scored his first senior goal in a 2-2 draw against Cambridge.
The youngster made the move to Bournemouth in January 2022, with the Cherries beating a number of clubs to land his signature.
He spent the second half of last season on loan at Scottish Premiership side Hearts, playing 17 times as the club finished in the top four.
Hill made his Premier League debut against West Ham on the opening day and will now wear the number four shirt at Ewood Park.
Director of football Gregg Broughton said: “As a centre-back, James has all the attributes we look for – a strong one-v-one defender, aerially dominant and comfortable in possession.
“We have worked hard to secure James’ services ahead of many other Championship clubs and as a Lancastrian, we know he will find the transition to Blackburn Rovers straightforward.
“He has already played over 70 senior games, represented England at Under-21 level and most recently made his Premier League debut for AFC Bournemouth earlier this month.
“We are really pleased that Bournemouth recognise that our brand of football and training environment were the perfect fit for James to play his football this season.”
